Youth Counselor for After-School and Summer Camp Programs
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, THIS POSITION WILL MAINLY BE VIRTUAL TO BEGIN THE FALL SEMESTER. There also may be a few on-site tasks required during this time though no students or programs are being held in-person. For any on-site tasks, Agape is following all city-wide protocol regarding safety measures and personal protective equipment (masks required, temp checks, etc.).

Agape is seeking for Youth Counselors for our after school program. The After School Youth Counselor works closely with the Program Manager to implement a wide variety of academic and enrichment activities to ensure a high-quality program is delivered daily. This is a contract position, which is active through the 2020-2021 school year and summer camp. Positions are considered for renewal upon a satisfactory term-end review.
MUST BE AVAILABLE Monday-Friday, 1:30pm-7:30pm for consideration (Summer hours are 7:30a-3:30p).
DESIRED REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- One year of experience working in an after school program or similar environment
- One year of experience working directly with children within the elementary and middle school ages
- Must have excellent leadership skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Desire and ability to work with children of all ages
- Demonstrates responsibility, dependability, efficiency and integrity
- Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities
- Ability to work independently as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision
- May be required to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. in various forms
- May be required to sit, stand, or maintain physical activity for extended periods of time.
- Must exhibit patience and understanding
- Receives and follows detailed instructions
- Responds to situations with appropriate action
- Must be flexible and capable capable of working under pressure in an ever-changing environment
Other Desired Qualifications (not required)
- Adult and Child CPR/First Aid/AED Certification
- Fluent or Conversational in Spanish
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic Support
- Provide students with homework assistance to help improve academic skills and regular school day performance
- Implement program enrichment activities
- Works closely with the Program Manager to deliver lesson plans that assist students with literacy, mathematics, and language arts
- Implement academic curriculum for participants in all grade levels
- Foster a comfortable learning environment to enhance participants’ learning styles
- Engage participants in fun educational program activities
Safe and Healthy Environment
- Ensure the safety of all participants, prevent accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules, and regulations; administer first aid within trained ability; contact the appropriate medical authorities when necessary
- Implement appropriate classroom management techniques to maintain a cooperative and creative instructional environment
- Establish a relationship with each child and know his or her present level of understanding; consider the needs of all the children and treat each child with respect and dignity
- Establish classroom rules and daily scheduled routines for students
- Ensure the facility is ready for use before students arrive. This may include pre- or post-cleanup.
- Create and maintain an environment that is safe, clean, and student friendly
- Serves as bus monitor to ensure all students are safely transported to and from all Agape programming
Volunteer Management
- Provide instructional materials, resources, and feedback to tutors (Homework Buddies) for improving student’s academic skills
- Communicate the needs, backgrounds, learning styles, and learning difficulties of student who are matched with tutors
- Assist tutors and parent volunteers
Administrative Duties
- Reports all incidents to the Supervisor, and completely fills out proper health log and/or accident/incident forms
- Must effectively use Microsoft Office Suite
- Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance
- Follows proper setup and breakdown checklist procedures
- Plans daily enrichment activities and keeps record of monthly highlights
- Reports all plans to the Program Manager for approval before implementing
- Follows budgeting guidelines for their classroom
- Completes timesheets properly and with accuracy

Agape serves 200+ children each day, providing after-school programming and family services which focus on character development, academic achievement, reading proficiency by third grade, high school graduation and post-graduation placement. Since 2009, high school seniors enrolled at Agape have had a 95% graduation rate. Each year 1,200 volunteers help Agape end generational poverty through a multitude of ways.
